A man fled the scene of a crash Tuesday morning after a Dodge Challenger crashed into a pedestrian traffic signal pole in southwest Houston.

The crash happened around 3:27 a.m. near the Southwest Freeway feeder road and Fountain View Drive.

A witness reported hearing a red Dodge Challenger traveling southbound on the feeder road at a high rate of speed before hearing a loud crash.

The vehicle had struck a pedestrian traffic signal pole. The airbags deployed, and the vehicle sustained significant damage, with its wheels reportedly separated from the vehicle.

A man was seen getting out of the driver’s side, while a woman exited the passenger side. The two reportedly began walking southbound away from the crash.

The woman was later seen returning to the vehicle after emergency crews arrived. She was sitting in the driver’s seat when firefighters arrived and helped her out of the vehicle.

The woman was able to walk but appeared to be hyperventilating. EMS evaluated her and placed her in an ambulance. It was not immediately clear whether she was taken to a hospital.

The male driver was not at the scene when emergency crews arrived. It was not immediately clear where he went or why he left.

The investigation remains ongoing.
